Eastern Kentucky University athletics will be in full swing over spring break.

The softball and baseball teams will be competing on the road and at home over the break. The softball team will host the EKU Invitational from March 6 to 8. This will be the first time this season that the Colonels are playing in Richmond.

The softball team is off to their best start to the season in program history with a 17-2 record. They are also on an 13 game winning streak.

The Colonels will play a two game series in Daytona Beach, Fla. at Bethune- Cookman University on March 11.

The softball team will wrap up spring break in Jacksonville, Fla. at the Jacksonville tournament from March 13 to 15.

The baseball team is off to a 8-2 start and will play seven games over spring break.

The Colonels are heading into spring break with a lot of momentum after defeating No. 11 Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, 2-0 on Friday, Feb. 21.

That win was the fifth for the Colonels over a top-30 ranked team in the last five seasons. EKU improved to 4-0 for the first time since 2001 with the win at LSU.

The Colonels will start with a home series against Norfolk State from March 6 to 8.

This will be the first time in program history that the Colonels have faced the Spartans from Norfolk, Va.

The baseball team will then have a one game matchup against in-state rival Northern Kentucky University in Highland Heights.

EKU faced NKU on April 30, 2019 and defeated the Norse, 11-8. That game was played in Lexington at a neutral site. EKU scored 10 runs combined in the fourth and fifth innings to overcome an 8-1 deficit and beat Northern Kentucky.

The last time EKU traveled to NKU, the Colonels blew out the Norse, 17-2 on April 10, 2019.

Overall, EKU leads the all-time series record, 7-3.

After the NKU battle, the Colonels will return to Earl Combs Stadium to host in-state rival Morehead State from March 13 to 15.

The baseball team is looking to get revenge over the Morehead State Eagles after losing to them in the Ohio Valley Conference tournament last season, 11-3.

“This has been a special season and it’s unfortunate seeing it come to an end,” said head coach Edwin Thompson after the loss to Morehead to end the season in 2019. “I wanted to play another day for these seniors. They’ve given so much to this program.”

Overall, Morehead State leads the all- time series against EKU, 18-17. The last time EKU has defeated Morehead State in Richmond was back on March 25, 2018 with a final score of 4-3.

The EKU women’s golf team will also be in action over spring break in Florida. The Colonels will make the trip to play in the University of North Florida Collegiate in Jacksonville, Fla. from March 9 to 12.

The women’s golf team is coming off of a ninth place finish in the Florida Atlantic University Winter Warm-Up on March 10.

The men’s golf team will also be on the course over spring break, but in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Bash at the Beach tournament, hosted by Appalachian State, will run from March 9 to 10. The men’s golf team competed in the President’s Day Match Play in Weston, Fla. from Feb. 17 to 18 and placed seventh in the tournament.

The indoor track and field season will come to a close over spring break.
The Colonels will participate in
the NCAA Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, N.M. on March 13 and 14.

The Colonels had a strong performance in the OVC indoor championships on Feb. 26 and 27.

The EKU men’s track and field team finished third, while the women’s team took seventh at the 2020 OVC Indoor Championships at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

The men finished with 108.5 points, losing only to Eastern Illinois (154) and Southeast Missouri (150.5). The Colonels defeated Tennessee State (86), Belmont (81), SIUE (58) and UT Martin (23).

The Colonel women won three medals on Thursday.
