Head football coach Mark Elder addressed the media on Monday about the 2019 recruiting class.
This year’s recruiting class is ranked 11th in the FCS and first in the Ohio Valley Conference, according to 247 Sports. 247 Sports also has Eastern ranked higher than North Dakota State, who won the FCS National Championship last season. This is Elder’s fourth straight top-25 rated class.
“Very excited about the young men we have joining the program,” Elder said. “It’s a great mixture of a handful of guys that are upperclassmen that will come in and compete immediately to help us take a step forward and a number of guys that are going to have great careers here that will develop over time.”
This year’s class for EKU football includes 17 high school seniors, three junior college transfers and three FBS transfers. Two of the 17 high school seniors are from Madison Central High School. Elder talked about the importance of recruiting in the state of Kentucky and recruiting locally.
“We want to recruit players that will help us win championships,” Elder said. “We want to sign as many players locally and from the state of Kentucky as we possibly can that are going to help us win championships… We think that Kentucky has very good football.”
Eastern Kentucky will kick off the 2019-20 football season on Aug. 29 against Valparaiso at Roy Kidd Stadium.
