The Eastern Kentucky University women’s golf team won the 2019 Colonel Classic by 13 shots on Saturday at the University Club at Arlington. Senior Elsa Moberly continued her solid performance this season as she took home the individual title by 4 shots.
The women’s golf team has dominated the Colonel Classic over the years. EKU has won the event four out of the last six years. This was also a special time for first year head coach, Mandy Moore, as this was her first victory of the season.
Individually, Moberly had a solid performance at the Colonel Classic. Starting the final round on Saturday, she was tied for second, but just one shot out of first place. The senior from Somerset shot a final round one under 71 for a three-round total of 212. Ragnhildur Kristinsdottir tied for second as she went even for par. Moberly was chosen as the Ohio Valley Conference Women’s Golfer of the Month on Tuesday.
As a team, Eastern finished the Classic 11 shots over par and defeated second-place-team Northern Illinois by 13 shots. A total of 13 teams competed in the Colonel Classic.
The Colonels have been close to winning first in a tournament all season, as they finished second in the Redbird Invitational in early September and third in the Idle Hour Collegiate Invitational in early November and in the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate in March. Now with their first win under their belt, the Colonels will have motivation and confidence heading into their season finale on April 5 at the Murray State Jan Weaver Invitational and the Ohio Valley Conference Championship on April 15.
