The Eastern Kentucky University men’s and women’s cross country teams started their spring seasons with a run past Morehead State in a meet on Saturday at the University Club at Arlington.

The men’s team was able to control the top six spots in the 6K race for a score of 15. The first five for EKU finished finished together: sophomore Keeton Thornsberry (18:58.33), redshirt sophomore James Sugira (18:58.56), freshman Charles Kipchumba (18:58.82), junior Ahmed Jaziri (18:59.17) and junior Joan Tapias (18:59.39). Shortly behind were junior Jackson Siddall in sixth place with 19:22.0 and sophomore Nikodem Dworczak in 10th with 19:58.0.

The women’s team was able to slide past in the 4K course against MSU, 27-29. Redshirt sophomore Laura Taborda beat her closest competitor by 31 seconds with 14:47.0. Senior Alicia Minczuk finished sixth with 15:49.0, senior Olivia Schoenherr was seventh with 15:50, sophomore Abbie Schoenherr finished 11th with 16:16.0 and senior Haley Holbrook finished 12th with 16:21.0.

The cross country team will be heading to Tallahassee, Florida, on Feb. 5 for the FSU Winter XC Classic.
