EKU men's basketball falls to Morehead St.

Head coach A.W. Hamilton looks on during the Morehead State game on Saturday in McBrayer Arena.

The EKU men’s basketball team lost in a heartbreaker to in-state rival Morehead State on Saturday night by a final score of 78-77.

With this loss, their season is over, and the Colonels are eliminated from contention for the Ohio Valley Conference tournament. Eastern finished the season 13-18 and with 6-12 record in the OVC.

Before the game, EKU honored their two seniors, Nick Mayo and Kirkland Humphrey.

“I’m thankful for my teammate and coaches at EKU,” Mayo said after the game. “Enjoying this journey with my boys, coaches and teammates. It’s been a fun year.”

The game went back and forth for most of the 40 minutes as there was 22 lead changes and 11 ties.

Eastern led down the wire, but Morehead St. pulled away after Malek Green was fouled grabbing a rebound with under 20 seconds to go. Green made both to take the lead.

Mayo missed a shot at the buzzer down by one.

Mayo finished with 27 points, seven rebounds, four blocks, three assists and two steals in his final game in an EKU jersey.

“I’m heartbroken for Nick,” head coach A.W. Hamilton said after the game. “He is the best. There will never be another Nick Mayo. His performance this year has been incredible. He is such a tough kid.”

Eastern shot 49.9 percent from the field. EKU also protected the ball well as they only committed eight turnovers in the game. EKU scored 21 points off of the 15 turnovers they forced Morehead St. to commit.

Freshman Jomaru Brown led both teams on the night with 31 points.
