The EKU football team won a hard fought game against Robert Morris on senior day by a final of 40-39 in overtime.
The Colonels recognized 10 seniors and two redshirt seniors before the game. Those players included: Corey Glass, Clayton Schmerber, LJ Scott, Dan Paul, Gavin Bryant, Jordan Whitfield, Neiko Creamer, Cornelius Floyd, Jared Tucker, Ralph Patton, Cameron Kowewski, and Justin Myles.
The game started in Robert Morris’s favor, but it wasn’t until right before halftime when the momentum shifted to the Colonels.
With five seconds on the clock, Darrien Tipps-Clemon blocked a Robert Morris punt at the Colonials’ five-yard line and Brentton Ervin scooped it up and scored, making it 23-16 and swinging the momentum to EKU at the break.
“We won by a point. I don’t know if the tone would be much different, but we would be talking about a different outcome I think...that was great. We needed that,” head coach Mark Elder said after the game.
Robert Morris hit a 40-yard field goal with 26 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game at 33-33.
Eastern took the ball first in overtime and went to Scott on four consecutive plays. The senior running back responded with runs of eight yards, 12 yards and three yards, before barreling in from two yards out to give the Colonels a 40-33 lead. It was Scott’s third touchdown of the day.
Robert Morris responded by scoring on a two-yard pass to Dorian Bowie. The visiting Colonials opted to go for the two-point conversion, but quarterback Jimmy Walker’s pass was swatted away by Tucker in the right corner of the end zone to give the Colonels the victory.
Making his first career start, true freshman Parker McKinney finished with 186 yards and one touchdown through the air. McKinney also threw his first interception of his career in the game.
“There’s some good and bad, as you except from a freshman… He played well enough for us to win which is good… I was proud that he was able to go out there and had one turnover and completed about 50 percent of his passes and took off on a couple of scrambles at the end of the game and that was great,” Edler said.
Redshirt senior LJ Scott rushed for 82 yards on 19 carries and three touchdowns including the game winning touchdown in overtime.
“How we scored in overtime was a highlight,” Elder said.
The Colonels went 6 for 6 in the red zone, scoring four touchdowns and two field goals. EKU had 151 rushing yards in the game and 186 passing yards.
Eastern is now 6-4 on the season and Robert Morris falls to 2-8.
This was the Colonels fourth victory in the last five games.
The Colonels will wrap up the 2018 regular season next Saturday when they hit the road to face Tennessee Tech. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. in Cookeville, Tennessee.
