Eastern Kentucky University forward Tre King goes up for a shot against Xavier on Nov. 30 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The Eastern Kentucky University men’s basketball team lost in a close overtime against Xavier, 99-96 on Monday night in Cincinnati.

EKU had the first points of the game in the first half but were unable to hold the lead for long. Although, the Colonels were able stay within single digits of Xavier and even tied several times.

Within minutes before halftime, Xavier was able to extend their lead a little over ten points. At halftime, the Colonels trailed behind the Musketeers, 48-39.

In the second half, EKU came out ready to fight back against the Musketeers’ defense and put up several points. The two teams answered back and forth to one another on both ends of the court.

With less than nine minutes in the game, the Colonels were able to close the gap but weren’t able to take the lead.

Forward Tre King shot a huge three-pointer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime tied at 83-83.

The Colonels scored the first points in overtime but were unable to get enough shots off to win the game.

Guard Jomaru Brown banked a shot in at the top of the key in hopes to tie the game up with only six seconds left in OT but his foot was on the line only giving the Colonels two points.

Allowing the last second free throws from Xavier to win the game, 99-96.

King finished with 25 points and 13 rebounds leading the Colonels.

Guard Curt Lewis was just behind with 20 points and four rebounds.

Guard Cooper Robb finished with 19 points and one rebound.

Brown came off the bench with 12 points and five rebounds. Brown missed the last two games due to an illness.

EKU finished the contest with a field goal percentage of 38.5, compared to Xavier's 58.3 percent.

Forcing turnovers helped EKU stay in the game and especially down the stretch. The Colonels won the turnover battle on the night, 25-11.

EKU moves to a record of 2-1 on the season.

The Colonels will travel on Dec. 2 to face off against USC Upstate in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
