The Eastern Kentucky University men’s and women’s cross country teams had solid performances at the RedHawk Rumble in Miami, Ohio on Saturday.
The men’s team won the RedHawk Rumble with a perfect score of 15 points. The women’s team came up short against host Miami by one point to finish second.
Senior Fred Kanda led a large group of Colonels at the front of the men’s race. Kanda won the individual title, finishing the 8K course in a time of 24:27.5.
Junior Zak Kirk was right on Kanda’s heels, finishing second overall in 24:29.3. Freshman Nikodem Dworczak came out third in his collegiate debut out of 44 overall competitors with a time of 24:30.6.
Senior Samuel Abascal was close behind Dworczak in fourth with a time of 24:35.6 and freshman Enock Kipchumba was just behind in fifth with a time of 24:36.6.
On the women’s side, freshman Viola Seromot led the team after winning the individual title with a 6K time of 21:45.6.
Freshman Laura Taborda was second on the team and fourth overall in 22:13.0. Newcomer Alicia Minczuk finished third on the team and sixth out of 34 runners with a time of 22:28.1.
The Colonels return to action on Oct. 4 at the Notre Dame’s Joe Piane Invitational.
