Taylor Brown, a senior at Lincoln County High School and Mia Marcum, a senior at Powell County High School, have received a $20,000 scholarship by the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation, Dell Scholars.
Brown and Marcum are a part of Eastern Kentucky University’s Upward Bound Program. According to the program’s website, EKU Upward Bound is an academic, college-preparatory program serving 125 students in Casey, Estill, Lee, Lincoln, Powell and Wolfe counties.
The scholarship provides the students with a laptop and personalized support resources that help reduce the academic, financial, and emotional stressors surrounding college. Brown will attend Eastern Kentucky University this fall with plans to major in English. Marcum will attend Bluegrass Community and Technical School in the fall and plans to transfer to EKU to obtain her degree in environmental sciences.
In a press release, Tamara Stewart-Mays, Upward Bound director said, “It has been a pleasure to watch Mia grow over the last three years she has been with us in Upward Bound. She works hard to be successful in the classroom and our UB community. We know she is capable of reaching her goals.”
Stewart-Mays recommended Marcum for the scholarship.
“Taylor is an outstanding student and has worked hard to achieve success. We are so proud of this accomplishment,” said Beca Morrison, Upward Bound assistant director in a press release.
Morrison recommended Brown for the scholarship.
