Steak 'n Shake will remain closed throughout semester

Students at Eastern Kentucky University have been asking about why Steak ‘n Shake is closed and when it will reopen again. Steve Caudill, chief auxiliary services officer, said that due to COVID-19 and the low number of students on campus, Steak ‘n Shake has been closed down.

“Due to the pandemic, there is not as much foot traffic on campus. On average some places are down by twenty to thirty five percent,” Caudill said.

Compared to other restaurants on campus, Steak ‘n Shake was the lowest in performance. There were also branding issues which ultimately made the decision to close it for the semester.

“Steak ‘n Shake is one of the lowest performers in total traffic. They also have a brand requirement for staffing. So you have to have a certain number of people staffing that location, and because of the lower traffic and those requirements it made more sense to close it down,” Caudill said.

Steak ‘n Shake will remain closed until further notice.

“We are going to keep it closed at this point. The general traffic on campus is not what it used to be,” Caudill said.

Chick-fil-A will also be the only restaurant in Lower Case that will serve breakfast. The sale at Subway for breakfast has dropped which resulted in the decision. Upper Case will still have breakfast dining options.

“We are going to make it breakfast only at Chick-fil-A. Just because sales have been really poor at Subway. Obviously you can still go to Upper Case for breakfast and have residential dining,” Caudill said.
