The Eastern Kentucky University presidential search committee’s activities have been postponed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The search committee, tasked with selecting EKU’s fourteenth president, was announced following the Feb. 28 Board of Regents meeting. The board voted to enter a contract with R. William Funk and Associates as the search firm to assist the committee.
Beginning March 23, the search committee’s activities were postponed.
“Due to the evolving circumstances that face our communities and, after many discussions with campus and community leaders, I am convinced that performing a presidential search during a declared national and state emergency is not in the best interests of our institution,” said Lewis Diaz, chair of the EKU Board of Regents in an email on March 23.
“As we navigate our way through this disruption, we will reinitiate the search when it is safe to conduct the robust national search that we have each envisioned,” said Diaz.
As of April 3, the committee had not conducted its first meeting, said Diaz in an email interview. At the time of the postponement, there were no formal or agreed upon activities scheduled for or by the committee.
The decision to postpone the committee’s activities was made by Diaz, he said in an email interview. He made the decision after consulting with individual faculty and staff at EKU as well as individuals in the state and federal government.
“Since most faculty and students are not usually on campus during the summer months, I think it makes sense to re-evaluate the environment in August and assess where we are and what we can accomplish,” said Diaz in an email interview.
