President Michael Benson, the 13th president of Eastern Kentucky University, has announced his resignation effective Jan. 6, 2020.

President Michael Benson has announced that he will be stepping down as president of Eastern Kentucky University effective Jan. 6, 2020, according to an email sent on Wednesday, Dec. 11. 

Benson will remain an advisor to the EKU Board of Regents during the presidential transition. An interim president is expected to be announced at the EKU Board of Regents meeting tomorrow Dec. 12. 

According to the email, Benson will use the next year to write his Gilman manuscript, which is under contract with Johns Hopkins University Press. 

“In the near future, my family and I plan to create time to personally say ‘thank you’ to the people with whom we have worked so closely,” said Benson. “Thank you for taking us in and making us a part of the EKU Colonel Family. This has become our home.” 

Benson has been president of EKU since 2013. Prior to coming to EKU, Benson was president at Snow College (2001 to 2006) and then Southern Utah University (2006 to 2013).
