Purdy’s baristas, Chloe Johnson, Mary Clay Hammerick and Miles Manuel pose behind the counter at Purdy’s Coffee Co. in downtown Richmond.

Down University Street, past Walter’s Hall and left on West Main Street lies one of Richmond’s popular establishments, Purdy’s Coffee Co. For many, Purdy’s is a place to retreat and relax from the stress of college life, while for others it provides a great environment to study and work on homework.

Tucker Sipes, a 21 year-old marketing major at EKU who visits Purdy’s at least once or twice every week, said the coffee shop offers him a quiet place to get work done.

“It helps me focus when I really need to study or get stuff done, if I ever need a break from the normal places I study, like the library or my apartment,” Sipes said.

Over winter break, Sipes said that he will be going back home to Louisville, but he might be coming back to campus for a couple days and visit Purdy’s.

Purdy’s has two locations in Richmond; the main location is downtown at 212 West Main St. and the newer one is at 444 Big Hill Ave. The downtown shop is open Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and is closed on Sundays. The Big Hill location is open Monday through Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to 6p.m.

For anyone interested in Purdy’s special drinks, Chloe Johnson, a barista at Purdy’s and a graduate from EKU with a communications degree, said the coffee shop is gearing up for the holidays.

“We’ll have our fall drinks running, and we’ll also have our holiday drinks running,” Johnson said.

Johnson also encouraged people to come to the shop for their new festive decor.

“Come see us! It’s a great place to hang out,” Johnson said. “We have a 10 percent discount for all students, so bring your EKU IDs… plus, over break, we will be decorating this Saturday [November 30th], so it’s going to be nice and joyful!”
