Marching Colonels practice

EKU Marching Colonels band and color guard team practice outside of Keen Johnson on April 17. The band will perform at Churchill Downs on May 2 for Thurby.

The Marching Colonels took advantage of the sunshine with an afternoon outdoor practice outside of Keen Johnson on April 17. The band and color guard rehearsed in preparation for a live music performance on the Thursday before the Kentucky Derby, also known as “Thurby.”

Music industry major Rena Tanaka said that practicing outside was very helpful to the band. “Rehearsing inside can be echoey and boomy and we can’t figure out how loud we’re supposed to be so rehearsing outside is better for us,” Tanaka said.

The Marching Colonels will perform at Churchill Downs for Thurby on May 2.
