My Turn: Voting is important but so is opinion

In last week's edition of The Progress, I read with interest the opinion of Michael Sheliga, who expressed his discontent with so-called "judicial activists."

Professor Sheliga's article bothered me for many reasons.

As a political idealist and aspiring public servant, I was troubled by his apparent disillusionment.

Terry's Reply

Posted: 11/12/06 @ 5:36 PM EST
By: Terry

David Fifer is a very obnoxious Jew (I am somewhat sure he is Jewish) who simply cannot relate with the conservative Christian Kentuckians who populate Eastern's campus. Don't believe me? Here is his blog---

http://fifer.blogspot.com/

If you look over the blog you will discover that his co-blogger is Doug Scott, who is also Jewish (I think) Reading his writings over the web (I typed his name in the google search engine) I quickly learned that he writes for UK's newspaper, the Kentucky Kernel, and has many views that would offend Kentucky's population. Here, read this. This is from his blog--

"LIN 212: Last class of the semester
Dialect exercise

After taking a quiz, we were told to pair up for a dialect exercise, in which we would ask our partner what terms they used for everyday household items. My partner was from Woodford Co., KY, so an example would be:

Doug: What word do you use to describe a member of the Jewish faith?
Classmate: Ummm...city folk?
Doug: I hate Kentucky.

My partner asked where I was from, and I informed him that I was from Roanoke, VA, and that no, it wasn't the lost colony. I guess I should have told him how to spell it as well. It's A Fact: if you are from Woodford Co., KY, you can't spell Roanoke."

End quote. In other words, if you are from a small town in Kentucky, then you are an idiot. It is hard to believe that the students at UK let Doug Scott walk around campus without getting beat up. It is even harder to believe that EKU would elect to its Student Government an arrogant windbag who is friends with a guy like Doug Scott. I bet David Fifer looks down on "hick" Kentuckians. He must think he is better than everyone he meets. On his blog he brags about his arrogance, saying he is proud of being a blowhard.

I do not have time to go over the many anti-Jesus comments on their blog (I guess their Jewish upbringing involved being taught to hate the Christians. This is more common in Jewish households than you think.), or the rude comments they made about people who support the religious right or watch Fox news (they call the watchers of Fox news and supporters of the Christian right idiots)

David and Doug are two very smug fools who think they are talented. They are anything but talented. They are dorky, lame, and corny. Their sense and claims of superiority over others is baseless (and makes them look clownish) The running John Stamos gag on their website is idiotic and unfunny.

It is too bad we cannot recall David as our president. He really is not cut out for the job. This alien, this...JEW, does not respect our culture, our people, our customs or our beliefs. He is not even from Kentucky. That this smug Jew thought he could come into OUR house, into OUR backyard, insult us, then expect us to support him as president, is the ultimate in chutzpah (a jewish word for arrogance). David and Doug represent something real in the Jewish community, something nasty, and that is the utter hatred and disgust of non Jews, particularly Christian southerners. They have a word for those whom they hate: Goyim. Next time David or Doug speaks to you, understand that they are concealing their smug sense of superiority, their contempt, and their hatred for you.

I hope future associates of Doug Scott and David Fifer read this post, learn from it, and disassociate from them.

Posted: 11/13/06 @ 8:47 AM EST
By: Nate Arnett

Someone needs to stop acting like a crybaby, and that someone is you. So what if Mr.Fifer is not the same religion as you, or even makes jokes on a satirical website about christianity. His religon has nothing to do with his ability to effectively run our student goverment. Untalented? When was the last time you lobbied to get a policy change on campus, or sucessfully got elected as SGA president? Yeah I thought so. You also make accusations that he shouldn't lead because he doesn't represent our student body, well last time I checked he was elected by a majortiy of people who choose to take part in the election. He was elected because he ran on an excellent platform and many of the promises he made are already in process. I also find it quite humorous that you blast him for expressing his opinion considering the content of the article you are responding to.

Boy... You make it sound like it's a crime to be Jewish... And for the record, Doug Scott is NOT Jewish, but I'm glad you think yourself to be an authority on both of them. And I'm glad you are such an authority on Jews in general, since you seem to know soooo much about them.

As a matter of fact, I remember a group of people who didn't like Jews either... They were called Nazis. Maybe you think they were right? I don't know what your beliefs happen to be, but I do know one thing: You are about the most unamerican person I have ever had the displeasure of discovering.

This country has survived because we are DIFFERENT. And you know what? I'm glad. Because I think it'd be better to not exist at all than to be a closed-minded, insensate moron like yourself.

And you know why people think Kentuckians are backward and stupid? Because of PEOPLE LIKE YOU. I'm ashamed you live in my state. Go back to the holler, brew some shine and romance your cousin. It seems to be the only thing your family has been doing for the past 200 years.

Why is it that you show no respect, are unable to show respect, for the Jewish culture or beliefs? I find this quote of yours somewhat foot-in-mouth: "this...JEW, does not respect our culture, our people, our customs or our beliefs." Are your "beliefs" that jews are not allowed in Kentucky? Using "jew" as a slam more than 5 times in this article, you are very obviously biased, closed minded about other faiths, and do not know how to successfully articulate your thoughts in larger words.

Also, you're a dickbag.

Jessica's Reply

Posted: 1/19/07 @ 12:03 AM EST
By: Jessica

Ok, so I would like to respond to the comment above. I personally am what would typically be considered a ?conservative Christian? who is a native of Kentucky. I have called Kentucky home my entire life, and yet I manage to have a sense of humor about it. Yes, there are stereotypes about our state, and if you have ever laughed at a Jeff Foxworthy joke in your life then you have no place to criticize either Doug Scott or David Fifer. That blog was, in fact, created to be satirical and that was made more than clear. Also, he has done more for this campus, for you than anybody probably. He has changed numerous policies, improved relations with Richmond, and obviously loves this campus.

I personally find it illogical to suppose that someone who ?looks down on ?hick? Kentuckians? would invest so much of his time, effort, energy, and self to improve conditions for everyone on this campus that is in Kentucky. He was elected by the majority vote, and it is senseless to say that he doesn?t represent our student body. He is a student here; he loves this school as much as anyone else here, and wants to work to make it the best one possible.

As regards your blatantly suppositious, narrow minded, and more than somewhat racist comments, all I can say is that I am embarrassed to have it known that you claim a faith I share. The main teaching of Christianity is to love God and love people. You were rude, self-righteous, and completely inappropriate. None of those qualities were shared by Christ who is most definitely a Christian?s role model in everything. You, in my mind, are a disgrace to ?our? faith, and it?s people like you that make me embarrassed to admit that I am a Christian, and give us such a bad reputation in general. I hope next time you consider this before posting such a thoughtless comment.

Posted: 1/19/07 @ 12:58 AM EST
By: Stu Mark

Terry,

Brilliant stuff. Really, really funny. As I wrote to a good friend just about two minutes ago, "...right now I'm too astonished, pissed, and tickled pink, all at the same time."

First, to get it out of the way, I'm Jewish. As the gang at Monty Python put it, "I'm a kike, a yid, a heebie, a hook-nose, I'm kosher mum, I'm a Red Sea pedestrian, and proud of it!" Indeed, yes, I am proud of it!

Second, I thought the "city folk" line was priceless. I'm 40 years old and I've been exposed to that concept for quite a number of years. When I call my Dad tomorrow, I'll tell him that line and I guarantee he'll burst out laughing. He's been there too. Oh, hmmm, actually, he really, really has, as he got out of Poland in 1939, on one of the last boats that were allowed to transport Jews out of Poland in 1939.

Third, yeah, y'know what, good for you for having the guts to put something like that up online. Because more important to me than my Judaism is my Constitutionalism, especially my First Amendmentism.

Bravo to you for your ability to so well-illustrate anti-Semitism, bigotry, and hatred, with just a dash of provincial, for good measure.

Thank you for this, a chance to teach my children how *not* to behave.

Amber's Reply

Posted: 1/19/07 @ 1:30 AM EST
By: Amber

Terry, in regards to your post concerning David Fifer, how can you call yourself a so-called Christian and attack another person for his/her own beliefs? Matthew 22:34-40 states, "Honor thy father and thy mother; thou shalt love thy neighbor as oneself," but I guess you are all too familiar with those words since you are the perfect representation of a Christian.

You wrote, "It is too bad we cannot recall David as our president. He really is not cut out for the job. This alien, this...JEW, does not respect our culture, our people, our customs or our beliefs...."

First of all, I grew up in Richmond, Kentucky: I grew up down the street from Eastern. David has done SO MUCH for this University and the city of Richmond. How dare you say that he does not "respect our culture, our people,..., our beliefs" or attack him by calling him "Jew." I know David personally and he is probably the most selfless individual I have ever have the privilege of getting to know. While you're out pointing a dirty finger at those different from you with your idiotic and prejudice remarks, he's working diligently on your behalf and on the behalf of the Univeristy.

He sacrifices everything to make sure that EKU and its students are receiving all possible opportunities and advancing in every way, shape, and form. David puts his health, nearly all of his free time, and sadly much of his school work behind his position and responsibilty of our Student Body President and Regent. He tries to make it to every EKU event there is: sporting event, lecture, forum, celebration-everything- to support Eastern and its students.

During his short time in office, David Fifer (along with our Student Government Association) has:

*given us the opportunity to expand our horizons by providing the University with free New York Times papers to read daily

*helped extend bar hours in the city of Richmond for the safety and interest of the students

*begun working on a project to bridge campus to downtown for a highly lit, sidewalked "Safety Path"

*assisted in getting the campus brand-new Airport-Style Shuttles to replace our "old school buses" for more efficient and up-to-date transportation

*for the first time ever, brought the citizens of Richmond and EKU together by personally serving on the Board of Directors of the Richmond Chamber of Commerce, and appointed various students to serve on different civic commissions

Those are just a few examples of his devotion to governance and his love of Richmond and all that is EKU. How dare you mock his beliefs and his character due to a satirical blog that anyone knows that reads it, is just a big joke. You are obviously completely inept as a human being and I cannot believe you call yourself a Christian with the blatant hypocrisy in everything you wrote.

This country was founded on the ideals of: "liberty, equality, self-government, individualism, diversity, and unity" (Patterson 2006). I agree entirely with The Hebrew Hammer's comment that you, Terry are completely "unamerican."

brandonburtner's Reply

Posted: 1/20/07 @ 1:59 AM EST
By: Brandon Rene Burtner

Hey Terry. I am not hiding my identity, because I am not a coward, and I stand behind what I say with my good name and my life. David Fifer is a good man. He is a funny man, a smart man, and an ethical man. He has done more for this campus in his short stay here than most students or faculty members have ever thought of doing. You are a cowardly anti-semite. You are an embarrassment. Your close-mindedness and childlike bigotry is sickening. I guess it is just the same that you not accept responsibility for your comments, it will help you in the long run. If you are going to be a racist fool, it is better to do it under the guise of secrecy. You probably wear a white hood when you attend your meetings too. You do Christianity a disservice. You do the accepting love of Christ a TERRIBLE disservice.
