T-Bombs purchased and closed, to be demolished

Abstract:
The beginning of a decade coincided with the end of an era for many Eastern students and Richmond residents as local bar T-Bombadils closed its doors forever.

The local nightlife hot spot served as a First Street landmark for 30 years, providing live music and cheap drinks - a constant favorite for several generations of Eastern students....

I love how the story portrays Viviane as a victim. The soap opera behind this story would make for good reality TV.

My friends and I had a lot of fun on First street (and other downtown Richmond spots)from 1980-1984. With the closing of T-Bombs, all the college bars we used to go to back in those days are now gone.

Another sad step in demolishing anything with personality or character in Richmond. Instead of remodeling and retaining something historical, we eliminate anything that may give us an identity. Can't wait to see what they do with the Glyndon...

I totally agree! Richmond is going under fast. We need places like this to draw in people. What happen to the good ole days!! Richmond use to be an awesome place to live, hang out, and party with a nice relaxing atmosphere now Richmond has went under and we need this revenue!!

I can see the smirk on the new owners' faces right now. I wonder what else they will buy and demolish. Maybe the commission will consider selling city hall to them to help balance the budget.

Sad

Of all the bars on First Street when I was an EKU student from 1979 to 1983, and for several years after when I was a reporter for the Richmond Register, T. Bombadil's was my favorite. This was where my friends and I hung out every Thursday night, where I heard some great bands, watched the last ever episode of M*A*S*H while out with a pretty coworker, and where I always knew people I knew.

It's a shame that these 19th century buildings weren't preserved and refurbished. This could have been Richmond's Victorian Square, but instead it's going to be a construction site for an outgoing politician who used his office for personal gain.

This is sad in so many ways.

Clearly these guys do not have Richmond's best interests at heart. They've done nothing but purchase and tear down historical buildings downtown. They are robbing Richmond and its residents of the town's character. Money is all that matters to some people. These people won't stop until they've taken away any reason to come downtown. What is he even talking about with the comment "Some nice restaurant from Lexington?" Makes the guy sound clueless. He and his business partner are trying to eliminate any reasons to come downtown. Sounds like he wants another chain of some kind. That's all Richmond needs. Another generic 1st Richmond building with a chain restaurant in it. Nice going guys.

I was a frequent customer of T. Bombidils in the late 70s. It was "the place" where my friends and I would meet up and hang out. Being a Lord of the Rings fan, I loved the name and Dave (the owner) and I had several conversations about the character Tom Bombidil. I think it's extremely sad that T. Bombidils will be destroyed.

Went back to Richmond last April and the entire city is a shell. Not sure what the kids do in Richmond anymore, but it is clear that things have changed forever. Worked for Dave back in the day, very fun job and made great money. T-Bomb's will be missed..

Kids don't stay in Richmond anymore...EKU's party days are dying. We're a suitcase college. It is truly a sad thing. T-Bombs will be missed. I'm glad I got to see it in my hay day.

I also attended EKU long ago 1983-1988. My friend and I, also an EKU Alumni were there the day T-Bombs was being emptied. It was really sad. I actually met my wife in O'Riley's Pub which has long since passed with J.Sutters, Tazwells, Bottles, 1890's, The Family Dog, Poopiazzi's, First on First, Bear and the Bull, etc. These weren't just places to drink/party but social gathering sites and part of EKU/Richmond culture. Now all that is gone and the "campus beautiful" just looks old, sad and alone.

My buddies and I use to hit up T-Bombs for "Whiskey Wednesdays". It is sad to see these guys tearing down all these historical buildings. Richmond will become a boring cookie cutter city.

"...the building would definitely be demolished."

Whatever happened to the idea of preservation? Tearing down buildings in the heart of downtown and replacing them with sterile brick and vinyl structures is not progress. For good or bad, 1st Street was the the one thing that set Richmond apart from every other small college town. Now we are left with chain restaurants and bars in malls. Ugh.

Richmond is a ghost town full of politics now. The EKU Students could care less anymore about going downtown, because there is no "downtown" anymore. Unless the younger residents of the city revolt, the conservative money-hungry politicians are just going to keep running over everything. Soon, we are going to see some horse and carriage action while news boy yell out daily news in front of ye ole Town Hall...

Richmond used to be a party town and it really helped with the money being pulled into the city, but obviously no one cares about that anymore. EKU Students, get off your asses and do something.
