The March 3 nominations deadline for the Morris K. Udall scholarship is quickly approaching. The scholarship is available to sophomores and juniors working toward a bachelor's degree or associate's degree.
Applicants must be majoring in an area concerning the environment or Native American healthcare, be a U.S. citizen and have maintained at least a B average.
The Foundation expects to award 80 $5,000 scholarships and 50 $350 honorable mention from applications nationwide in 2006.
To apply, students must first contact the faculty representative, Charles Elliott.
Applications must include a college transcript, a completed nomination form, three letters of recommendation and an 800-word essay.
Scholarship recipients are chosen based on a demonstrated obligation to issues concerning the environment, tribal public policy or Native American healthcare, a course of study in which applicants will make a contribution to these fields, and displays of leadership and character.
Applicants can access the official application and a list of frequent problems by visiting the Foundation's Web site at www.udall.gov.
Former Udall scholars have pursued careers in areas such as environmental sciences and policy studies, political science, agriculture, natural resource management, anthropology, sociology, and American Indian studies.
The Udall Foundation gives scholarships each year to honor Morris K. Udall, a congressman for three decades. Udall helped reinforce self-governance in Native American tribes, as well as increase the size of national parks in Alaska.
