Late-game goals puts soccer over OVC foe Tennessee Tech

Belmont earned a late win against Eastern after taking the game into overtime.

Around the 31st minute, freshman Cassie Smith scored Eastern’s first goal off an assist from senior Nikki Donnelly. Smith’s goal was her team-leading fifth score of the season.

The Colonels went into the second half with a 1-0 lead against Belmont (6-8-2, 4-4-1 OVC) but five minutes into the half, Belmont scored and tied the game. The score remained 1-1 until the end of the second half, putting the game into overtime.

Soccer team stuns Murray State and Austin Peay in late-season surge

Eastern’s soccer team had a successful homecoming weekend with wins against conference foes Murray State University, 2-0 and Austin Peay State University, 3-2.

The Colonels shut down Murray State, 2-0, on Friday, Oct. 18. The win was Eastern’s first in four games.

Senior Kristan Paynter scored Eastern’s first goal in the 30th minute of the first half, 15 yards out on an assist by sophomore Amani Thomas.

The Colonels outshot the Racers 16-13, with senior Nikki Donnelly leading the team with five shots. Senior Brittany Nomady added four, two that were on goal. Paynter had three shots with one on goal, Smith with two, both being on goal and Thomas with one shot, one on goal and two assists.

Colonels tie Southeast Missouri, drop game to UT Martin

Eastern’s soccer team (2-10-2, 1-3-1 OVC) found mixed results after facing two OVC opponents on Oct. 11 and 13. The Colonels played Southeast Missouri State University to a scoreless draw and lost 1-0 to the University of Tennessee at Martin.

The game against Southeast Missouri went scoreless for 110 minutes. The first half showed a strong attack from Eastern. The Colonels outshot the Redhawks 9-3 and had multiple attempts while in the 18-yard box.

Colonels drop two games during weekend to OVC foes

Eastern’s soccer team (2-9-1, 1-2-0 OVC) dropped a weekend of conference games against Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and Eastern Illinois University. Eastern battled Southern Illinois (7-3-, 1-2-1 OVC) on Oct. 4, but lost, 2-1.

The game remained scoreless until the second half when Kayla Delgado made the first goal for the Cougars at 54:30. Another Southern Illinois goal followed at 78:14 to move the score 2-0.

Panthers eliminate Colonels from postseason play

From day one of the season the Colonels had one goal in mind: to make a run in the NCAA Tournament. But to get there, the women’s soccer team would need to win the Ohio Valley Tournament. On Thursday, the Colonels fell to Eastern Illinois University 2-1 in the first round of the OVC Tournament at Morehead State University, ending any hopes of moving forward in postseason play.

After winning five straight, the Colonels now find themselves on the losing end of things, dropping two straight, both 1-0 contests. The Colonels fell to Southeast Missouri State Friday, and then lost to Eastern Illinois Sunday.”I was extremely disappointed when we showed up to training on Saturday, the response they gave me,” Coach Lindsay Basalyga said.

When I talked to the women’s soccer team at the beginning of the season one thing was clear: they wouldn’t be satisfied with less than an NCAA Tournament berth. To go even further than that, the Colonels want to make it to the second round of the tourney. It was a goal they set for themselves and seemed like a pretty lofty goal, but as we all know, goals drive us to achieve greatness.
