Panthers eliminate Colonels from postseason play

From day one of the season the Colonels had one goal in mind: to make a run in the NCAA Tournament. But to get there, the women’s soccer team would need to win the Ohio Valley Tournament. On Thursday, the Colonels fell to Eastern Illinois University 2-1 in the first round of the OVC Tournament at Morehead State University, ending any hopes of moving forward in postseason play.

Emotions will be running high Sunday when the Colonels host Morehead State University (9-6-1, 6-1 OVC) in the final Ohio Valley Conference soccer game of the year. Morehead, a team the Colonels ((7-7-2, 4-3 OVC) have never beaten, sits in first place in the OVC.

After winning five straight, the Colonels now find themselves on the losing end of things, dropping two straight, both 1-0 contests. The Colonels fell to Southeast Missouri State Friday, and then lost to Eastern Illinois Sunday.”I was extremely disappointed when we showed up to training on Saturday, the response they gave me,” Coach Lindsay Basalyga said.

When I talked to the women’s soccer team at the beginning of the season one thing was clear: they wouldn’t be satisfied with less than an NCAA Tournament berth. To go even further than that, the Colonels want to make it to the second round of the tourney. It was a goal they set for themselves and seemed like a pretty lofty goal, but as we all know, goals drive us to achieve greatness.
