Men’s cross-country team ranked No. 28 nationwide

For the first time in the program’s history, Eastern’s men’s cross-country team, which starts its season this weekend, has climbed into the national polls.

The U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association national poll, which was released Tuesday, ranked the Colonels 28th in the country.

For Eastern, the ranking solidifies the hard work that has been infused into the program over the years.

Eastern football kicksoff its 2011 campaign Saturday against the Big-12’s Kansas State University, and all eyes will be on the new signal caller who steps under center.

Junior quarterback T.J. Pryor is out for the game with a broken bone in his throwing hand that he suffered in a scrimmage Aug. 20, forcing Eastern to call upon its reserves to fill in.

Colonels win in overtime thriller

Devon Saini didnt need a third goal, her second one did the trick.

With the Colonels and RedHawks of Miami (Ohio) deadlocked 1-1 at the end of the regulation, Saini, a true freshman, couldn’t have played more like a veteran. Her second goal of Sunday’s game came just in the nick of time, too—three minutes into sudden death overtime—propelling Eastern to its first win of the season.

Eastern’s Head Volleyball Coach Lori Duncan has a thirst for winning that is hard to quench.

So it’s probably safe to say she wasn’t pleased with her team’s 11-18 record from last season.

Marshall steals one from Eastern

Eastern baseball dropped its second straight game 8-5, when visiting Marshall broke a 5-5 tie in the top of the ninth inning on Tuesday. The Colonels hosted the Thundering Herd at nearby Whitaker Bank Ballpark, home of the Lexington Legends.Sophomore right-hander Anthony Bazzani started on the hill for Eastern and went six innings, only allowing three earned runs on four hits.

Pitching struggles in losses to Southeast Missouri

The struggles continued for Eastern Saturday afternoon.Southeast Missouri swept Eastern (7-20, 1-4 OVC) in the double header. The Colonels lost game one, 7-6, and game two, 13-6.In game one, Eastern’s Bryan Soloman hit a two-run homerun to tie the game at 6-6, but a walk, a sacrifice bunt and a base hit to left field by SEMO in the top of the ninth proved to be the difference in the game.
