Colonels’ defense pushes men’s basketball to second-half rally

By Evan Nichols When Eastern traveled to Tennessee State University on Feb. 14, the Colonels’ stifling defense overwhelmed the Tigers and Eastern rallied to a 69-41 victory in Nashville to improve its winning streak to five consecutive games. The Colonels forced Tennessee State (5-22, 2-10 OVC) into committing 19 turnovers, while holding the Tigers to only 31.7 percent from the field on 13 of 41 shooting. Tennessee State was also held to just 9.1 percent shooting from behind the arc as the Tigers went just 1 for 11 from 3-point land. When Eastern met Tennessee State just one week earlier at McrBrayer Arena in Richmond, the Colonels escaped with a narrow 77-72 victory. During that game, Marcus Roper scored a game-high 32 points to keep the Tigers afloat. Roper, one of Tennessee State’s best offensive threats, was held to just two points in the 28-point rout Saturday. Eastern took a 26-19 lead into the locker room, but used a 9-0 run coming out of the break to push its lead to 35-19. The Colonels held Tennessee State scoreless for the first three and half minutes of the half. Freshman Paul Jackson made a layup with 3:18 left in the game to cap an 11-0 Eastern run to go up 58-32.
