With the OVC tournament right around the corner, the Colonels are playing their best volleyball of the season. The team beat both Belmont University and Tennessee State University on Oct 27 and 28, respectively.
EKU finished off Belmont in four sets, winning by a score of 3-1. The team defeated Belmont with both offense and defense, with sophomore setter, Maria Ferragonio leading the team with 20 assists and 14 digs for her second career double-double. Junior libero Chloe Rojas sparked the defense once again, leading all players with 19 digs.
As the team handled it’s business with Belmont, they had to make a quick turnaround to get ready for its senior night against Tennessee State. After losing the first set, the Colonels took three sets in a row to close the door on TSU.
Despite it being senior night, it was freshman Lauren Kolenik who led the way for the Colonels, matching her career high four blocks, and setting a new personal career high with 14 kills.
“This win was key for us, going towards the end of the season with a win streak and a win on senior night will give us the confidence we need to push through the end of the season and earn some more wins,” Kolenik said.
Alongside Kolenik, Rojas, the reigning OVC defensive player of the week, led all players with a total of 28 digs.
These two wins helped the Colonels to an 11-15 record (9-3 in OVC play), pushing the team up to third in OVC standings. The Colonels are back in action Nov 3 and 4 as they take on Jacksonville State (away) and Tennessee Tech (away).
