The Colonels traveled to Cincinnati Friday night for a match with Xavier University. Eastern would come away with the win by a score of 1-0 thanks to rainy weather and tough defense from both teams. This marks only the second time the Colonels have ever beaten Xavier and they also avenge their loss to the Musketeers from last season.
The weather did not help the Colonels either as it was a rainy night, but 86 minutes into the game, senior Jordan Foster delivered the lone goal of the game off an assist from fellow senior Emmi Carroll. This was Foster’s third goal of the season, and it’s her second straight game winner. Foster has scored half of Eastern’s goals this season.
The game was virtually deadlocked with each side having the same amount of shots but the difference was that the Colonels had a total of eight shots on goal with five of those coming from Foster. Eastern out-shot Xavier with five more shots on goal, which helped goalkeeper Anna Hall and ultimately gave the Colonels the win with the late goal in the 86th minute. All three Eastern defenders, Kacy Eckley, Haley Kemper, and Katie Shaffler, played all 90 minutes in the shutout as well.
Hall held on for her second shutout of the young season, saving all three of Xavier’s shots on goal. Hall has looked fantastic to start the year, saving 17 shots so far on the season.
After starting off slow with an 0-2-1 record, the Colonel’s are on a two game winning streak. This brings the Colonel’s record to a total of 2-2-1, with three straight games in Richmond against beatable opponents in Gardner-Webb, East Tennessee State, and Austin Peay.
Eastern’s next game is back home in Richmond for the Colonels’ home opener, on Friday, September 8th against Gardner-Webb. Kick off is 4 P.M.
