Bennie Coney, R-Senior, QB
Since transferring from the University of Cincinnati, Bennie Coney has become a key offensive player for Eastern with outstanding performances against FBS school University of Kentucky and FCS rival Murray State. In 2015, Coney was named to the watch list for FCS National Performer of the Year Trophy. Look for Coney to mature in his senior year and win the starting quarterback position for the third consecutive year.
Ethan Thomas, Sophomore, RB
After injuries plagued the depth chart last year, running back Ethan Thomas averaged 55.3 yards per game and earned a spot on the 2015 Ohio Valley Conference All-Newcomer Team. The 5-foot-11, 210 pound sophomore will be aggressive in his pursuit for a starting position. Watch for Thomas’ ability to physically overtake a defender’s weak tackle and gain more yardage on each run.
Devin Borders, R-Senior, WR
A frequent target for quarterback Bennie Conley, Borders leads wide receivers in receptions and is second on the team in yards. A 6-foot-6, 220 pound receiver from Florida, Borders also holds OVC records for seven career blocked field goals and twelve career blocked kicks. Borders is a monster on the field and a guaranteed play-maker for the 2016 spring game.
Lucas Williams, R-Junior, K
Eastern is often known for producing great place-kickers, and redshirt-junior Lucas Williams has proved to be one of the best. A Russell County native, Williams is eighteenth in the nation in field goal percentage and was named First Team All-Ohio Valley Conference in his 2015 season. With record-holding blocker Borders on special teams, it will be interesting to see Williams play on April 16.
