The Eastern baseball team jumped out to 2-0 lead early in the first inning in the series finale against Lipscomb University on Sunday. Despite the early lead, the Colonels were unable to score again, losing the weekend series.

The Colonels came out swinging early with a leadoff home run by senior Doug Teegarden. Senior Kyle Nowlin followed the homer with a double to left center. Nowlin advanced to third on a groundout to first base by Mandy Alvarez. With a groundout to shortstop by junior Ben Fisher, Nowlin was able to score, taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Unfortunately, that was all the Colonels were able to put on the board.

The Colonels held off Lipscomb from scoring until the third inning when they cut the deficit in half with a RBI single to left field. Lipscomb was then able to take the lead (3-2) with a two-run home run to left center field.

Mandy Alvarez tried to start an eighth inning rally with a two-out single to left field, but the Colonels were unable to do any damage.

Junior Hunter Dunn was the starting pitcher for Eastern. Dunn allowed three runs (one earned, two unearned), seven hits, struck out three and walked two during the four innings he pitched. Junior Nicholas Cumpston did not give up any runs on one hit in his four innings of relief. Cumpston struck out three and did not give up a walk.

Preseason All-Americans Kyle Nowlin (2-4, RS) and Mandy Alvarez (1-4) performed well in the series finale.

The Colonels take on Virginia Commonwealth University Friday, Feb. 26 in Wilmington, North Carolina.
