Though rain shortened the Colonel Classic on April 3 and 4, the women’s golf team still managed to pull through with the tournament title. The tournament was scheduled as a 54-hole event at the Arlington Golf Club, but was cut down to an 18-hole round Saturday due to heavy rain Friday.
The event was the first and only home tournament for the Colonels at the par-72, 5,824-yard Arlington Golf Club course in Richmond.
The Colonels won against Ohio University (307) in second place as well as Ball State University (308) in third place. Fellow OVC teams, such as Tennessee State University (311) and Austin Peay State University (320), also competed in the 12-team event.
Sophomore Sofie Levin tied for first out of 73 players, scoring an even par of 72. The Stockholm native tied at first with Ohio’s Hailey Hrynewich. Close behind at a tied third place was junior Anna Gleixner with a total score of 75.
Sophomore Emilie Simmons (77) tied for 13th, junior Becky Sharpe (79) tied 26th and senior Nicki Henry (81) tied 34th out of the 73 players.
The Colonels return to action April 20 through 22 in the Ohio Valley Conference championship. The tournament will be at the Hampton Cove Golf Club in Huntsville, Ala.
