Eastern’s softball team dropped a doubleheader event April 4 against Murray State University on the road. Eastern was scheduled to play Austin Peay State University on April 3, but was postponed because of rain.
The Colonels lost 5-4 in game one after a last-inning comeback attempt and fell 3-1 in game two thanks to Murray State’s strong pitching.
Eastern made it on the board first in the opening inning when freshman Paige Murphey scored. Murray State (22-12, 9-5 OVC) put two on in the same inning, however, and led by one. Murphy’s RBI triple scored sophomore Krislyn Campos to tie the game in the second inning. Murray State added two more runs in the second inning and another in the fifth to jump back ahead.
The Colonels trailed by three heading into the final inning and found its groove long enough to add two runs to the board. Murray singled, then Tackett hit a perfectly-timed home run to come within one point. Eastern’s next two batters made it on base, but was followed by three ground outs to cut the Colonels rally short for the final 5-4 loss.
Murray State led the entire second game, starting in the third inning with two runs.
Eastern tried to catch up in the fourth inning when Campos scored on a wild pitch but couldn’t make the comeback as the team was held to a total of four hits for the entire game.
Senior Shaylon Robb pitched for Eastern and took the 3-1 loss.
The Colonels (15-20, 5-6 OVC) return home April 11 for a doubleheader against Tennessee State University starting at 4 p.m. Eastern plays Tennessee State again at 1 p.m., April 12. The Colonels stay at home as they take on the University of Kentucky at 7 p.m., April 15.
