Eastern students will soon have the chance to get free Microsoft Office software installed on their personal devices.

Microsoft Office 365 Pro Plus will be available for free through students’ EKU MyMail accounts, beginning Thursday, March 27, which will allow all Eastern students to download the software. Tammy Cornett, head of IT Communications, said the software giveaway was a move to help those who need regular access to the programs, but don’t already own them.

“We’ve been working on this for a couple of weeks,” Cornett said. “We wanted current and future students to have easy access to the Microsoft software.”

Cornett said nearly 98 percent of students already use Microsoft Office, at least according to Microsoft.  With the Student Advantage program, students can get their hands on the latest Office 365 suite, powered by the cloud, across all their devices for free. Microsoft Office 365 Pro Plus will be released as the full Office version, and will be available for PCs, Macs, iPhone, iPad and Android platforms, Cornett said.

Students will be able to use their EKU email addresses and passwords to download the software, Cornett said. Students may download to as many as five different devices, including computers and mobile devices. Students who download the suite will be connected to the Microsoft OneDrive, which will allow them to access documents on different devices, as well.

Instructions on how to download the Office suite will be located on the IT website at

“This will be very beneficial to students,” Cornett said. “It is an all-around good package.”
