Junior Patric Sundlof was the highlight of Eastern’s men’s golf season opener Feb. 10 and 11 at the Mid-American Match Play. The tournament took place in sunny Florida and hosted by Ball State University, Sundlof won all three of his matches while the team came in fourth place.
“It was three matches and I won all three of them individually,” Sundlof said. “It was a good tournament to start the season with, not a lot of pressure when its match play, so it was kind of nice and really good to come down from the snow and get some sun and some heat.”
The 8-team event was contested on the Lake Jovita South Course, which is 7,153 yards and has a par of 72.
Eastern beat Toledo in the first round. The Colonels lost to Eastern Michigan in the semifinals. Eastern ended play with a loss to Xavier on Tuesday in the third-place match.
Sundlof beat Toledo’s Mike Lancaster 5 and 3. He then beat Eastern Michigan’s Josh Heinze. On Tuesday, Sundlof finished with a victory over Xavier’s Tanapol Vattanapisit.
Freshman Travis Rose had a win against Toledo as well. Junior Taylor Riggs had wins against Toledo and Xavier.
Ball state ended up winning the three-match tournament.
“It is a good starting tournament, you can make a couple mistakes and it doesn’t matter that much with stroke play,” Sundlof said.
Despite the snow and cold weather the team still had to practice in preparation for this match.
“We have been hitting out of the learning center and in the studio,” Sundlof said “We have only been practicing for an hour each time, 8-10 times all semester, but it is very limited practicing. Short game is kind of tough to practice when it is snowy outside.”
Even though the tournament wasn’t barred by poor weather, Sundlof said the team still hasn’t figured out how to get home because all the flights have been canceled because of weather.
“We are probably going to head to the airport and see what they say,” he said. “We might stay here tomorrow to and then drive back on Thursday or something, not really sure yet.”
The Colonels will play it’s next match on March 3 at the Samford Invitational.
