The university has reached the final step for hiring one of new top-level administrators — but it has gone back to the drawing board with the other position.
The search committees for the vice president for student success and the vice president for university relations and branding have made recommendations to President Michael Benson for the hire, said Malcolm Frisbie and Betina Gardner, chairs of the respective search committees.
Wednesday afternoon the university announced the search for the vice president for university relations and branding will continue. Additionally, the position title has been changed to the vice president of marketing and communications.
President Benson said a consensus could not be reached on a candidate, adding that each finalist had attributes that were desirable.
Mark Sandy, director of athletics will be the interim vice president for marketing and communications beginning Jan. 1.
Frisbie said the recommendations will remain private until Benson and the university make offers to the candidates and settle on terms of employment, such as salary and start date.
Benson said an offer has been made to one candidate, but as of Wednesday afternoon the vice president for student success position had not been filled.
Frisbie said his committee came to a consensus quickly for a recommendation. He said the challenge for both committees was finding a good fit.
“The $1 million question is trying to figure out who somebody is and imagining how they will fit in our culture,” Frisbie said. “The people hired have to mesh and feel like they can fit in at the job.”
