Another loss for the Colonels came about from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) Flames March 3. The fifth and final game of the Under Armour Classic, after a combination of nine runs and 16 hits for UIC, gave Eastern’s a 9-3 loss.
An additional three errors for Eastern helped UIC steal the game away from the Colonels.
Senior Raquel Howes led the Colonels with three-for-four at the plate with a double and two RBIs. The two-out, two-run double by Howes evened the score to three at the top of the second inning.
UIC regained the lead in the bottom of the second with two runs. The Flames solidified their lead with another run in the fourth inning, two in the fifth and one final score in the sixth inning.
Sophomore Leanna Pittsenbarger gave up nine hits and five runs in four relief innings, which contrasts UIC’s Devin Miller pitching a no-run game during her three innings.
UIC scored a run at every at bat against Eastern except in the third inning.
Coach Worthington said there are still some individual mechanics and technical aspects the team needs to work on to progress further.
“We’re making progress,” Worthington said. “Our main goal is to be prepared for conference.”
The Colonels will be on the field again this upcoming spring break week during the Saluki Invitational.
