The start of the two-game weekend was a success after the Lady Colonels defeated a winless Jacksonville State 80-69 Feb. 16.

With Jacksonville (0-26) on a losing streak, Eastern went into the game anticipating a strong effort from the Lady Gamecocks.

“It’s a win, and we’ll take it,” head coach Chrissy Roberts said. “We can’t let our guard down. It was hard not to focus on their zero record, but they came in here with nothing to lose.”

Despite its record, Jacksonville State came in defensively strong pushing the Lady Colonels to a slow shooting start. Momentum picked up with the help from the bench. Freshman Miranda Maples subbed in for Eastern and gave the Lady Colonels their first lead of the game five minutes into the first half.

The Lacy Colonels continued to lead into the second half.

Eastern slowed down defensively and offensively toward the end of the game, but the ladies maintained a lead over the Lady Gamecocks. With 3:15 left in the game, the Lady Colonels pulled away from Jacksonville to end the game with a score of 80-69.

Junior Marie Carpenter led the Lady Colonels with 23 points. Brittany Coles followed with 18, and senior Alex Jones had 11 points. Senior Raechele Gray, freshman Shelly Harper and Maples each put up six points. Senior LeRa’e Allen ended with five points, senior Jalisa Bryant with three and junior Pilar Walker with two.
