The Lady Colonels pulled off a two-point win against in-state rival, Morehead State University (66-64) Feb. 9. Although the Lady Colonels struggled with a slow shooting start, shooting 30 percent in the beginning of the first half.

Eastern’s fortunes changed after halftime: The team found its shooting touch and built a 16-point lead over the Lady Eagles.

Senior forward LeRa’e Allen led the Lady Colonels in scoring with 18 points.

Senior Brittany Coles finished with 16 points, staying in the game for all 40 minutes, making this the fourth consecutive game of no rest for the senior guard.

Senior Raechele Gray and junior Marie Carpenter chipped in 12 points each. Senior Alex Jones led the team in rebounding with 14.

The Lady Colonels kept up their defensive pressure, forcing Morehead into 17 turnovers and scoring 21 points from these miscues.

“Our defense and communication on the court were key to the game’s outcome,” Allen said. “Our communication on both ends was a major positive in this game. We didn’t really have any negatives tonight. When we were tired we kept pushing, we never slowed down.”

That strong will to keep going gave the Lady Colonels their lead throughout the majority of the game.

With less than five minutes to go in the last half, Lady Eagles Junior Allie Turner put up three consecutive baskets, giving Morehead their only lead of the game.

Lady Eagles quickly fell back behind Eastern with under three minutes to go. The Lady Colonels kept the lead the remaining time of the game to pull out the two-point victory.

The victory brings the Eagles closer to the end of their season, giving the Lady Colonels a desire to finish the remaining season on a strong note.

“We’ve got five more games to go,” Allen said. “We can’t focus on past games. We won and now we’ll keep going on to the next game.”

This weekend’s win improves Lady Colonels’ overall record to 14-8.

Eastern, at 8-3 in the OVC, remains the conference’s third-best team.

The Lady Colonels’ next game will be on their home court against Jacksonville State at 4 p.m. Feb. 16. They continue with another home game against Tennessee Tech at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18.
