With 4:50 left in the second half, freshman Taylor Filipek hit two free throws to the gap to 51-50 against Murray State. But the Racers went on a 10-0 run, capped off by a pair of free throws by Jeffrey McClain, to silence the Colonel’s comeback surge and complete the victory 66-56.
Eastern (15-15, 9-9), has now lost four straight games and for the first time in recent memory is not able to capture double-digit regular season conference wins.
Spencer Perrin led the Colonels with 14 points. The Colonels shot a dismal 23.5 percent from the three-point line, while the Racers couldn’t miss, going 20-of-38 from the field and 7-of-14 from behind the ark.
Murray State’s Isacc Miles led all scorers with 23 points and B.J. Jenkins chipped in 18 of his own.
The Colonels, who at the week’s beginning were in a tie for fourth place in league play, now enter the Ohio Valley Conference tournament as the No. 6 seed. Eastern plays No. 7 Southeast Missouri Wednesday night, March 2, in Nashville.
