After a break-out freshman season, it was only fitting that Kayla Drake was named Ohio Valley Conference Women’s Basketball Freshman of the Year.In a season where the Lady Colonels only won seven games and missed the OVC Tournament, Drake was the one of the few bright spots. The Indiana native averaged 16 points and 4.5 rebounds a game this season.
She also led the team with 76 assists and 59 steals.
Drake was named OVC Player of the Week seven times throughout the season.
She was ranked fifth in the OVC in scoring, the highest of any underclassman. Her 2.2 steals a game was the third best in the league.
Drake is the third Lady Colonel in history to be named Freshman of the Year. She joins Ashley Cazee (2004-05) and Kim Cunningham (1993-94). Cazee and Cunningham both went on to have very successful careers at Eastern.
