After winning the OVC Championship in April the men started off the 2008-09 season with an empressive second place finish at the John Piper Intercollegiate.Going into the final round on Tuesday the Colonels trailed host Bowling Green by only four strokes.
Eastern shot a 292 in the third round, their best round of the tournament, but could not catch Ohio University who moved into first place, three strokes ahead of the Colonels.
Senior Trey Bowling finished tied for fourth at even par. Senior Jessie Massi tied for ninth at 6-over-par. And senior Shawn McConnell and Brian Fister finished tied for 18th at 9-over-par.
Eastern Freshman Billy Peel Jr. got his first taste of collegiate competion. He competed as an individual in the tournament. Peel shot a 72 on the final day to finish tied for 28th.
Sophomore. Corey Welch also competed as an individual. Welch shot three consecutive 77’s carding a 15-over-par.
Eastern took first in the John Piper Intercollegiate a year ago.
The Colonels will be back on the links a week from Monday, Sept. 22. They travel to Muncie, Ind. to compete in the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational hosted by Ball State.
Eastern finished second in that tournament last year.
