Eastern students stood in line anxiously in the middle of the day on Monday-and not for concert tickets, a hot meal or a free t-shirt. They were waiting on open beds at Richmond’s newest tanning salon. Sun Tan City, located next to Penn Station in the University Shopping Center, opened in December of 2007. It’s part of a chain that has sixty-seven locations nationwide, and moved into the vacated Movie Warehouse space. And now, according to voters, it’s Richmond’s best place to tan.

“I come at least a few times a week,” said Alyssa Wetzel, a deaf education major from Lexington. “It’s really clean and it has good beds,” she said.

The prices are attractive-especially since one payment per month generally allows unlimited visits, and payments can be as low as $18.88.

The hours are also convenient. It’s open until 11p.m. on Monday through Thursday, and until 10 p.m. on Friday through Sunday-making it easy to fit tanning into any schedule.

Another aspect that seems to attract students is the variety of options for tanning.

“We offer everything from basic beds to the spray tan beds,” said Amy Dyer, the salon director.

This means that even if you’re too fair to tan on your own or you’re not comfortable with regular beds, you can still get a completely safe and natural-looking tan-instantly.

There’s also an entire wall of accelerating lotions and other products that enhance the tanning experience.

And if you’re feeling a little overwhelmed or you’re not sure about where to start, there’s help. Knowledgeable staff members-many of whom are Eastern students-can answer any questions you have.
