A new Kohl’s store will be opening near the Toyota dealership on the Eastern bypass this spring, creating more job opportunities for Eastern students. The grand opening of the store will be March 12, but a job fair was held throughout this week in the Perkins Building, continuing today from 12:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Today is the final day of the fair.

The job fair will be where the store hopes to find the bulk of its employees, said Randy Hutchinson, Richmond store manager.

“We encourage the students at EKU to apply,” Hutchinson said. “We have numerous part-time positions available.”

These part-time jobs include ad set associates, customer service/cash office associates, cosmetic/beauty associates, freight workers, housekeeping associates, loss prevention officers, register operators, replenishment associates and sales floor associates.

Candidates applying for hourly positions must meet limited requirements, which include being 17 years of age and passing a drug screening.

Certain preferred qualifications will be taken into consideration for each of the job positions, according to the Kohl’s Careers Web site.

Most of the items noted include basic math and reading skills, legible handwriting, being comfortable standing or walking for an entire shift and good verbal and written communication skills.

The site also suggests candidates should be able to lift 35, 50 or 75 pounds, depending on the nature of the job.

If potential applicants are not able to attend an interview appointment during job fair hours, the store might accept more applications closer to the opening in March, Hutchinson said.

The application process begins online, at, where interested people can fill out the application and schedule an interview online.

Applicants can also call the Kohl’s Hiring Hotline at 1-877-NEWKOHLS.

Walk-in applications are accepted; however, they are not guaranteed an interview according to Kohl’s hiring regulations.

Interested parties are encouraged to apply early.
