Jacob Korir started the 2008 indoor track and field season in a familiar location: first place.The senior won the 3,000-meter race as the Colonels began the indoor portion of their track and field schedule Sunday at the UK Invitational held in Lexington.

Korir completed the course with a time of 8:02.08. His performance in the race was dominant. Korir not only won the race, but he defeated his closest competitor by nearly 27 seconds.

Eastern competed against several schools from major conferences in the event. Schools such as UK, Georgia Tech, Tennessee, Alabama and Ohio State were represented at the invitational.

Several other Colonel runners made their presence felt on the men’s side as well. Sophomore Elkana Kurgat finished in second place in the mile race.

Kurgat did defeat all other collegiate students in the race, though, as he lost to Thomas Morgan of Zap Fitness.

Eastern’s men also put their stamp on the sprinting events, as well as the distance races.

Senior sprinter George Bailey finished sixth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.05. Sophomore Nicholas Landis finished ninth in the same event with a time of 7.16.

The Colonels also had participants place in the top ten in the field events. Juniors Randy Hopkins and Jacob Bane placed in the top ten in the weight throw. Hopkins finished sixth with a throw of 15.85 meters, while Bane took ninth place with 12.61 meters.

Sophomore Joseph Meyers finished tenth in the shot put with a distance of 11.67 meters, and sophomore Jordan Sharp finished fourth in the high jump with a jump of 1.89 meters.

On the women’s side, the steady senior Katy Ankrom had the best showing of the day. Ankrom performed well enough to secure a top ten finish in the mile run. She finished with a time of 4:56.88-good enough for sixth in the race.

The Colonel women also had standout performances in the field events. Sophomore Lara Futch finished eighth in the high jump of 1.58 meters.

Freshman Cunnishia Foster took seventh place in the triple jump with a distance of 11.22 meters.

Eastern’s track and field team will return to action at the Middle Tennessee State University Invitational. The event is scheduled for Jan. 26.
